Terra Industries selects Pentaho’s BI platform

Pentaho Corp., an open source business intelligence software maker, announced that Terra Industries Inc., a producer of nitrogen fertilizer, has selected the Pentaho BI platform to provide reporting and analysis based on data in Terra Industries' SAP R/3 system.

Initially, Terra Industries users that manage production and inventory will use Pentaho Reporting to integrate customer demand and production volumes as part of a Web application that will be built using the Eclipse IDE open-source software framework. Over the longer term, Terra Industries said it would also use Pentaho Data Integration to extract and integrate operational information from SAP R/3, PeopleSoft HR, TabWare, and other systems to provide a centralized view.

Terra Industries generated $1.9 billion in 2005 revenues, employs around 1,200 people in North America and the UK, and is headquartered in Sioux City, Iowa. The company’s manufacturing facilities produce anhydrous ammonia, urea ammonium nitrate solutions, ammonium nitrate and other nitrogen products for agriculture and industry. Terra Industries’ facilities are located in North America, the UK, and Trinidad and Tobago.

According to James Keairns, IT director at Terra Industries, the company chose Pentaho for its range of features and low cost of ownership because of its open source business model.
